Hello, @kropp, I'm impressed with the way @JBToolbox self-update works - an amazing one-button experience! Could you share how that works technically, or point to an example in the wild? I want to do the same for the desktop app, but written in Go, so anything will help.

@delnariel @JBToolbox In a nutshell, it’s just unpack to a temporary directory, run from there, replace executable in the permanent location, and, finally, restart from there.

@delnariel @JBToolbox However, if it’s not your core feature I’d recommend using some existing solution (like Sparkle for macOS) rather than implementing it from scratch. There are some many subtle complicated details, like permissions, delta updates, compatibility, etc.

@JBToolbox One issue i have with Toolbox app or compose desktop apps in general, is that they disappear once they loose focus on a M1 Mac. Have seen thjs happen on multiple M1s

@KeazorRobert @JBToolbox Can‘t say for other apps, but the Toolbox app works like a popup and disappears when it loses focus by design. You can always reopen it from the menubar icon or by assigning it a global keyboard shortcut.

@hszanowski Turn off your phone Wi-Fi, get your real GPS coordinates near the router. (Remember, they track WiFi networks anyway) Rinse and repeat. After a few days Google will clear the cache.
Helped me few years ago.

Expectation: 6 USB-C cables

Reality: USB-C, Micro-USB, Lightning, Apple Watch cable, Garmin cable and Aftershokz cable.

To make things even worse I sometimes need mini-USB cable. Sigh… So I fiddle with these cables. And Garmin one is so short that I need USB A-to-A extender to use it conveniently and it has loose connector. Sigh…

@Cypressious @JBToolbox It seems like the Linux distribution is a dynamically linked ELF binary (AOT compiled), not the one using the compose build tools (jlinked app). By the way, Graal still doesn't have AWT/Swing support in Linux and windows.

@sur3shg @Cypressious @JBToolbox It does use jlink during the build process, but it doesn’t use jpackage. We need custom native launcher to ensure there is single instance running and for some other OS integrations, like jetbrains:// protocol handler.

Hope you guys are keeping an eye on performance as I'm seeing a second of delay when opening the app for the first time.

Also, have you considered GraalVM native image or maybe even Kotlin Native for reducing size and memory usage?

As for GraalVM and Kotlin/Native, we are exploring both options, but it is way too early to say anything.

Oh, I completely forgot, also the GPIO ports on the back side. So it should be interesting as part of Smart Home

Why the @Jetbrains toolbox try to checking a file in the app that are not their apps??

@wingyplus @jetbrains Toolbox is searching apps by substring in their name, in this case it is “studio”, like in Android Studio. It should do it less aggressive though. Thanks for the feedback, we’ll fix it.

@JBToolbox question when downloading WebStorm form the toolbox on an M1 will it use the correct dmg? I see of you go to the website for WebStorm you can choose Intel or m1 for the dmg

@kropp @jetbrains Hi Victor, I have essentially two main problems: The app is not showing all the JetBrains apps I have installed (I have all of them on my MacBook Pro). And it only shows 2 of them and that there is an upgrade available, but it’s not true, both are updated to the latest version.

I worked on MacBook Pro with M1 chip the whole day today, including 1 hour video call. It still has 44% charge. Not to mention I haven’t heard its fan yet after 3 months of everyday use. Mindblowing!

We are working on improving memory consumption independently of the underlying technology.

@lehtimaeki @The_Trakx @hhariri In my previous conversations with @kropp we found that there can be a slight delay as the toolbox pings the same feed for updates as Studio standalone, but maybe not as frequently.

A positive consequence of the virus outbreak is that people stop handshaking. I don't like this habit not only because of hygiene concerns, but also because it is discriminating.

I have 100+ colleagues in the office, I cannot shake hands with everyone every day. But skipping some people when you just shook hands with someone else nearby is impolite.

And in some cultures, like in Russia, it's a men-only habit which always seemed not right to me.

Impressive list of improvements in a minor update!

My favorite addition is buildList helper function, I've tempted to write my own so many times before, good that there is now one in stdlib.

Restored macOS from Time Machine. In spite of APFS snapshotting, some apps got in a slightly corrupted state. I'm happy it worked so I can recover my computer in approx. 2.5 hours

@jonnyzzz Is it a fifth time already that you restore your Mac?

Ok. It is tome to re-install macOS.
Issues so far:
- Bluetooth headphones do not work (reboot helps),
- Sleep mode does not turn off coolers, eats battery (reboot helps)

SMC reset and the related magic does not help

Technically, there’s no reason why smartphone can’t show desktop UI. You don’t even have to do anything special, it just work.

UNLESS you took specific measures to make your site unusable on mobile. But what sick mind would do such terrible thing and why?
