One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
“Listen, how do you guys stand this? What’s this crap the doctor was letting go about democratic procedures? Why don’t you have a vote?”
Harding smile at him and takes his time about drawing on his cigarette.
“Vote against what, my friend? That the Big Nurse shouldn’t have the right to ask questions during group meetings? That she shouldn’t look at us in that certain way? Tell me, McMurphy, what should we vote against?”
“Hell, anything! Vote against anything! Don’t you see, you have to do something to show you haven’t lost your guts? Don’t you see, you can’t let her sit on you? Look at yourselves: you say the Chief is afraid of his own shadow, but I’ve never seen a bunch of scared people in my life.”
Ken Kesey, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”
