App Defaults

Three years since original App Defaults lists have been shared by many people around the internet, some started revisiting them. I wrote one in 2023, and updated it in early 2025.

I opened them today and realized that literally nothing has changed since then. I discovered some new apps after the first round, which I now use regularly, such as NetNewsWire RSS reader.

Hereโ€™s my (almost unchanged) list
๐Ÿ“จ Mail Client: Mail.app
๐Ÿ“ฎ Mail Server: Migadu
๐Ÿ“ Notes: Apple Notes
โœ… To-Do: Apple Reminders
๐ŸŸฆ Photo Management: iCloud Photos & Google Photos (also want to finally setup Immich on my homelab)
๐Ÿ“† Calendar: Google Calendar via Calendar.app
๐Ÿ“ Cloud File Storage: Google Drive & iCloud
๐Ÿ“– RSS: NetNewsWire
๐Ÿ™๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Contacts: Google Contacts
๐ŸŒ Browser: Safari (personal) & Google Chrome (work)
๐Ÿ’ฌ Chat: Telegram, WhatsApp & Slack
๐Ÿ”– Bookmarks: Linkding โœจ
๐Ÿ“‘ Read It Later: Safari Reading List
๐Ÿ“œ Word Processing: Markdown, Google Docs
๐Ÿ“ˆ Spreadsheets: Google Sheets
๐Ÿ“Š Presentations: Keynote, Google Slides
๐Ÿ›’ Shopping Lists: โ€“
๐Ÿด Meal Planning: my wife
๐Ÿ’ฐ Budgeting and Personal Finance: personal custom app โœจ
๐Ÿ“ฐ News: Sรผddeutsche Zeitung
๐ŸŽต Music: Spotify
๐ŸŽค Podcasts: Apple Podcasts
๐Ÿ” Password Management: 1Password
๐Ÿ’ป Terminal: Ghostty

It doesnโ€™t mean that I havenโ€™t tried any new app since then, they are just more specialized apps. And, more personal.

And, of course, apps like ChatGPT or Claude have also become indispensable parts of daily workflows.
