Spotify Car Thing discontinued

Spotify discontinued Car Thing. If you don’t know what it is, it’s okay. Because this niche device has never been officially sold outside the US. And even there it was only briefly available.

I got one, but never used it for its original purpose. Instead, it was a (not very useful) desktop gadget for me. Its lack of connectivity options (it only connected to my phone, not laptop) proved it inconvenient for my use cases, and I quickly abandoned it.

The hardware was underpowered, and even then it was sold for a loss by Spotify. So it was only a matter of time, when they stop supporting it. Still, I wasn’t expecting them to brick the device.

Various Reddit communities are now discussing refunds (partially successfully) and future uses of the hardware (there haven’t been many during its lifetime). And I’m happy that it doesn’t impact me. This time I got lucky.
